Thor Halvorssen: Championing for Improved Human Rights


Thor Halvorssen is a renowned human right activist and a film producer. His vociferous advocacy for democracy and human rights have earned him enormous respect over the years. Thor inaugurated the Oslo Freedom Forum, one of the largest activist’ gatherings organized annually. He is the president of the Human Rights Foundation, a leading pro-human rights group. Thor has voiced his opinions on popular media outlets, including the BBC, The New York Times, Times Magazine, and Al-Jazeera among many others.

Thor was born in Venezuela to a well-off family. Thor Halvorssen attained his tertiary education at the University of Pennsylvania, where he graduated with Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Political Science and History respectively.

Human rights activism

Thor is a prominent authority in the advocacy for human rights. He particularly focuses on slavery, trafficking, dictatorship, and democracy. He has shared his expertise on the subject to leading institutions, such as Harvard University, United Nations assembly and the British parliament.

The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) is one the prominent groups that Halvorssen has served. He was the pioneering CEO of the organization. Under his leadership, FIRE merged with various liberation and conservative activist groups. Thor did not discriminate the members, regardless of their political stance.

Thor left FIRE in 2004 to start his organization, the Human Rights Foundation. The establishment, based in New York, promised to eradicate tyranny through relentless advocacy of human rights. The group’s top brass consists of renowned democracy activists as well as ethics champions.

Halvorssen is a sharp critic of the Chinese bureaucracy, due to the number of political prisoners it has incarcerated. As a democracy champion, he has pushed for the release of these prisoners. Also, Thor has outwardly spoken against inhumane legislations. To this regard, he criticized the Ugandan Government for punishing homosexuality with death, and his native Venezuela for their anti-Semitism laws.


Over the years, Thor has directed movies that present his ideas to the world. In the film, Freedom’s Fury, Thor shows the uprising against dictatorship in Hungary. Another masterpiece, Hammer & Tickles, is a recap of the Soviet Union’s tyranny. Other works in his film production portfolio include; The Singing Revolution, The Sugar Babies, and much more.
